Dual citizenship - which passport to use and when?

Hello

I recently acquired dual citizenship (South African and British). I live in the UK. I have a question about which passport to use and when.

I think its easier to use a recent example. I travelled to Turkey for holiday but to enter Turkey you need an e-visa which can be applied for online. I found out that South Africans don't have to pay anything for the Turkey tourist e-visa (but the British do and its £20). So I applied for the tourist visa with my South African passport details and booked the flight using my South African passport details.

When I left the UK I checked in at the flight desk with my SA passport and showed them my Turkey e-visa. No problem at all.

When I arrived in Turkey I went through immigration with my SA passport and e-visa. Again, no problem.

When I needed to leave Turkey (holiday was over!) I gave the check-in desk my SA passport which started some problems! Unfortunately they were all talking Turkish but finally someone said to me that there was a problem letting me on the plane as I didn't have a UK visa in my SA passport which would allow me entry to the UK (FYI: My SA passport had been renewed recently so it didn't even have the ILR stamp in it).

I then explained to them that I had a British passport as well and they all laughed and said: Why didn't you just say so! And they issued me the ticket and I went through Turkish immigration with my SA passport to get the exit stamp and all was good. When I arrived in London I used my UK passport.

Having thought about this, what is the correct way of travelling on two passports (taking the above into account)?

There will be times when I want to travel on the SA passport as tourist visas are cheaper/free (India is a good example as well as Turkey) and I will most definitely need to travel to South Africa on my SA passport.

From what I can tell, the problem is that the airlines are doing a visa/passport check before checking you in.

So using my holiday to Turkey as an example, how should I have done it?

1) Which passport should I have booked my flight with

2) Which passport should I have used to check in with when leaving the UK

3) Which passport should I have used when leaving Turkey

Can someone assist please? :)

I do realise that I need to enter/exit the UK with the British passport (same applies to entering/leaving SA with the South African passport) and that I also need to enter/exit any other country with just one passport (ie: don't enter on one passport and then leave on another)

Bank Statements vs Salary Slips

just a quick one.
I have just noticed my bank statements. The description agains the salary credits in my banks are 'UK EXCL CM AND W'. I actually work for Royal Mail. Not sure why that is! would that mismatch likely to cause any ambiguity in case worker's mind or any potential reason for refusal?

Entering back to UK on ILR

I have ILR in the UK for the last 18 years and in the last year we have been living in Dubai after a sudden move with my husband. I'm travelling back to the UK at the end of June, for a month holiday, with our 5 year old son (British passport holder).
I'm travelling in on my Australian passport, changed a year ago to my married name, which hasn't been updated with the ILR.
So I'm intending on showing with my new passport, my maiden name passport with ILR and having a copy of my marriage certificate and ILR original documents. This was advised a year ago when I contacted Home Office as I didn't have enough time to update new passport.
Anything else I need to consider?

Hi All,

I have a few doubts regarding uploading PCC documents for Visa :

2) While uploading PCC there are two options
a) Overseas Police Clearance - national &
b) Overseas Police Clearance - State/local police )

Which one should I select, as my PCC is issued by Regional Passport Officer but my verification is done by State/local police ?

Hi All,

As I am from non-ACT qualification, ACS didn't assess my Qualification, so I got my Qualification assessed by VETASSESS.

1) With what heading should I upload my VETASSESS assessment report ? as there is no separate heading for this.
2) With what heading should I upload my 10th & 12th mark-sheet ? as there is no separate heading for this.
3) Can I combine all my graduation mark-sheets into one single PDF and upload ?

Visa : doubts regarding uploading Work Exp. documents

Hi All,

My Case :: I have total of 10 yrs work exp. but ACS had deducted first 6 yrs of my exp. as I am from non-ACT qualification, so currently I have 4 yrs of exp. recognized by ACS. As ACS didn't assess my Qualification, so I got my Qualification assessed by VETASSESS.

I have a few doubts regarding uploading documents for Work Exp.

1) Does 'Employment Contract' mean Offer letters, Hike letters & relieving letters ?
2) How many months old Pay Slips should I upload ?
3) Do I need to upload Pay Slips of all my previous employments ?
4) Do I need to upload Bank Statements ? If yes, how many months old Bank Statement should I upload ?
5) Do I need to upload my resume ?
6) For Tax Document, can I upload both Form-16 and ITRs ?
7) Is Employer letter mandatory ?
8) Do I need to provide certified copies of references with whom I worked ? Will they contact these people for verification ?
9) How do I upload exp. letters for the exp. that ACS had deducted ? Should I describe this exp. as "non-relevant" ? Do I need to upload Emp. Contract, Pay Slips, & Bank Statements for this exp. also ?

Advice on getting a 3 year visa or work permit

Hi there,

I'm a 26 year old British citizen who is looking to move to Cape Town in early January 2015. A number of interlinking personal issues have come together to prompt this decision.

I currently work for the UN in Nairobi, Kenya, but want to quit and pursue music (a choice I should have made years ago). This is of course a big change, but one that I must follow. Some close friends are going to be studying at the Cape Town SAE Institute for 3 years come January and I was hoping to live with them.

So, considering that I want to pursue music, what are my best options for being able to stay in Cape Town for those 3 years? I know I can't just turn up and hang around until I "make it"... 90 days is the limit for tourist visas.

The only two options I have came up with are:

1) To study again. I would apply for a 3 year PhD that would hopefully get me a student visa. But of course PhDs are very competitive and funding is never guarantee.

2) To find a "proper" job that would grant me a work permit/visa. I see that I need to have an offer prior to arriving in SA, and that my local embassy would issue the work permit/visa in accordance with the contract? Despite having a bachelors and masters degree from a top UK university, and 2 years of international work experience, with all that I've read regarding affirmative action and the nation's high unemployment rate, I feel this also likely to be a highly competitive option, with no guarantees.

Other than these, can anyone recommend any other options? Within the boundaries of reason of course. :)

Cheers,

Ben

Peaceful countries to live in?

Hi folks,

I'm looking for suggestions of countries that don't involve themselves in wars/conflicts in any way. So basically the opposite of the USA and UK in previous years.

If it's pertinent, I'm a programmer and speak English and Mandarin fluently(But China is out of the question!). Would happily learn another language.

Cheers,

Jim

Appendix2. Third parties?

Hi all, thanks for read this.
I have a question about the appendix 2, we will apply for fiance visa under category A and D cash savings, bu I dont know what to answer in some quetions:
3.75 Cash savings:
b) Source of funds.
c) If applicable, detail the name, address and relationship of any third party who is the source of all or part of the funds.

In October 2013 I sent part of my savings to my fiance in the UK, the reason for this was the fluctuation between the Pound and the Peso.
And my father and my fiance´s father gave us as wedding gift money to complete the financial requierement in july last year.
The money have been in the account of my fiance for more than 7 months. We have to consider this as third parties? in b) Source of funds. It is fine to write savings for salary and wedding gift from parents? and in c) If applicable, detail the name, address and relationship of any third party who is the source of all or part of the funds. We have to write the names of our fathers?

Thank in advance.

ILR advice needed urgent!

Hi everyone,

Long time since i posted on here.....But am sure you will remember me....it is almost time for me and my daughter to apply for ILR, but my question is do we actually qualify for this or do we have to extend for the 5 years rule?? I applied for my spouse settlement visa in April 2012, my visa was granted but my daughters was rejected.

My visa started running 1st June 2012 and I only entered the UK 15th August 2012 as I was waiting for my daughters re-application to be granted but unfortunately hers was still turned down, so I entered the UK alone. My daughter joined me though 6 months later in February 2013, but her visa expires same date as mine. So what happens with my daughters now as it expires same as mine but obviously she hasn't been here in the UK long enough as I have been since we had problems obtaining hers.... Also could someone kindly help me with a fair list of documents I will need to submit please?

**Also another thing is, early this year I lost both my parents in one month so of course I and my daughter with had to travel for the funeral and I stayed abroad for a month because of bereavement. I guess this time away will not affect our application will it?****

Thank you so much for your help everyone.

How to complete FBAR form and for single person and not complete the 'Joint' section?

I'm a single guy completing the FBAR form, I've completed the form but when I hit validate it tells me I need to provide information into Section 3 which is 'Information on Financial Account(s) owned jointly'

Can anyone offer any advice on how you might go about signing this form without completing the 'joint' section 3? I am making the assumption that as I am single Is should not complete the 'joint' section.

I can't see anything in the guidelines that explains about not filing joint. (sorry can't post a link to the instructions because I only have 3 posts)

Immigrating to the UK with an ancestral visa

Can anyone give some advice on the following? We are planning on moving to the UK from South Africa at the end of March 2015 and need to find out more on what to do next;

- My boyfriend can apply for an ancestral visa, we have now confirmed that I can also apply under his visa as a dependant. Could someone advise how long before in advance we should apply for this and what documents we need to have to prove that we have been living together for more than 2 years. also should my boyfriend apply first and then me or should we apply at the same time?

- Is it better to go through an agency to apply for a visa, or do the application on our own, any advise on this?

- what are the financial requirements for us to make the move to the UK?

Longer Term Plan to Move to US

$

Hi everyone
Just wondering if anyone can give any guidance, looking to relocate from UK to US in the next 5 to 10 years.
I am a US Citizen by birth, husband is a UK citizen who has always lived in UK and we have a baby due in 2 months and a small dog (although the dog is nearly 4 so if it turned out to be 10 years she may not be with us anymore). I am aware I will need to get a US passport as I have only had a UK one since having my own (was on my parents' US passports when I was a baby). So, without realising it was wrong, I have been in & out of the US on holiday on my UK passport throughout my life.
Once I have my US passport what would be the process to get my husband a Visa? Would he be better with a work Visa than a family petition? He works for a global bank so may be able to get a transfer through there although we haven't looked far into this yet.
Is there any other documentation/form filling I need to be able to live in the US other than my passport? I am under the impression our child would be able to claim US citizenship through having a parent who is a US citizen - is that right? In which case would he also need a US passport and relocate in the same way I would?
My plan is also to build a career in the UK first of all then hopefully be able to apply for jobs in the US that are not entry level (hence the 5 to 10 year plan), I have a bachelor's degree in English Language & Linguistics from a good University and am going to complete a CHRP in my year's maternity leave then work my way up in a career in HR. Does anyone have any experience of working in HR in the US and know any of the differences or if there is a skills shortage for this kind of job in any particular states? Having looked at jobs available there seem to be quite a few in the areas we are looking at.
We would like to live on the East Coast to be not as far from family in the UK e.g. Florida, Boston, Carolinas, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey etc. The other option we would consider though is California - particularly San Diego, LA or San Fran - as this is where we have mostly visited, got to know best and now have a couple of friends.
We own a home in the UK so would need to sell up, but I have had a look at buying in the US & am thinking it may be better to rent initially then buy once you are out there and know the area.
So in short this is the plan I have in my head:
CHRP Certificate and build career
While working obtain US Passport & apply for US jobs
Once a job is secured apply for spousal visa if necessary/husband to apply for transfer
Sell house & other items
Rent in the US - possibly for a month at first then find somewhere longer term once there?
Move
Look to buy
Does that seem realistic at all! The only thing I am unsure of is how to apply for a job without a US residence - although I would specify I would be relocating from the UK so would they expect me to have a US residence yet ?
I am aware I will need to sort out my US taxes as I have been completely oblivious that I needed to file tax returns or was responsible for paying any US tax having lived in the UK from the age of 2, so this is another thing I have come across when looking at relocation and have been looking into, but would appreciate any advice on the relocation primarily.
Many thanks in advance for any help.

EU / Irish visa for non-EU spouse of UK national: How?

$

Hello... can anyone give me advice on how to get working / living / resident visa for my non-EU (Japanese) spouse? I am UK national and we are planning to move to either Ireland or Spain (probably Ireland). We are coming from out of EU, landing in UK, staying for two months (hope for her to get UK tourist visa) then travelling to Ireland or Spain. I do not have work in either, but have means to support myself. What do we need to do to get a visa for her in Ireland or Spain (Schengen)? Can we hope to travel together, get a flat and go get her permission to stay with me? If I am not employed in Ireland or Schengenland how much money do I need to show I have? All help and advice gratefully received.
